McCain Sets Lee 60-Meter Hurdles Record

Jeremiah McCain set the Lee 60-meter hurdles record with a time of 8.58 at the Rod McCravy Memorial.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Lee University Men's Track & Field team completed a long weekend of competition with an eighth-place finish at the University of South Alabama Jaguar Invitational. The meet was held at the Birmingham CrossPlex on Sunday. The Flames started the weekend in Lexington, Ky., at the Rod McCravy Memorial hosted by the University of Kentucky on Friday and Saturday. The two-day event did not track team scoring.

At Kentucky's Nutter Fieldhouse, Jeremiah McCain set a Lee record in the 60-meter hurdles. His time of 8.58 beat the old standard of 8.63 that was set by Derek Flatford in 2017.

Josiah Brooks recorded a preliminary time of 6.81 seconds to advance to the 60-meter dash final where he finished seventh at 6.84. He finished eighth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.54. Justin Brooks placed just ahead at seventh (21.47). Siphosethu Boya crossed the line at 22.60 (32nd).

In the 400-meter dash, Justin Brooks stopped the clock at 47.64 to finish seventh. McCain joined Brooks in the event and was 21st (49.40).

Josiah Brooks recorded a couple top-eight finishes in the jumping events. He recorded a mark of 14.90 meters to win the triple jump and landed at 6.94 meters to finish eighth in the long jump.

Ben Tabor, Caleb Eagleson, Dawson Reed and Moises Ponce gave Lee four of the top eight finishers in the 5000-meter run. Tabor was third at 15:01.76 with Eagleson right behind in fourth (15:10.73). Reed's time of 15:22.33 put him in sixth, while Ponce finished eighth (15:47.51).

The Flames recorded their 10.50 points at the Jaguar Invitational in the field events. The University of Memphis was first with 164 points. Texas State finished second (113) and Jackson State was third (66.50).

Gari Garmendia placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 15.31 meters and Evan Hansen cleared 1.91 meters to finish sixth in the high jump. The Flames garnered seventh-place points from Daniel Surman and Jonah Mayes. Surman recorded a height of 4.32 meters in the pole vault and Mayes covered 13.02 meters in the triple jump

Mayes also competed in the long jump and high jump. He was ninth in the long jump with a leap of 6.12 meters and went over 1.81 meters for 10th in the high jump.

Stacen Cunningham completed the 200-meter dash in 23.00 seconds to place 21st with Teagan Lenox right behind at 23.31 (22nd). Lenox also finished 21st in the 400-meter dash after crossing the finish line at 51.75.

Ben Gilman and Andrew Hendry took on the 800-meter run and the mile run. Gilman was 20th (2:02.97) in the 800 and 15th (4:36.79) in the mile, while Hendry was 26th (2:08.15) in the 800 and 12th (4:28.03) in the mile.

The Flames return to the CrossPlex in Birmingham on Saturday (Feb. 9) to compete in the Samford Open.
