Emma Hill scored the game-winning goal almost halfway through the second half and the Lee women's lacrosse team was able to hold on and defeat Tennessee Wesleyan 14-10 at the South Quad field on a rainy Thursday afternoon.
Â
The Lady Bulldogs opened up the scoring, quickly taking a 3-0 lead in under four minutes of play with goals from Mikayla Virden, Taylor Minauskas, and Florence Andrieu.
Â
Lee (3-0) was finally able to strike as Becca Broadwick scored her first goal of the game with 24:24 left in the half.
Â
The Lady Flames cut the lead to 5-4 when Rachel Giles took advantage of a Wesleyan yellow card off a Broadwick pass with just under 11 minutes to go.
Â
The guests responded going on a 3-1 run to stretch the lead back out to three with 1:59 left. Lee answered as Broadwick and Rachel Duda both threw in goals with under a minute left to go into halftime trailing 8-7.
Â
"We got out hustled in the first half, but I think we picked it up and started crashing the ball in the second half," said Lady Flame first-year head coach Derrel Martin.
Â
The hosts came out in the second half and got on the board first knotting things up at eight as Broadwick scored her third goal of the game. Hill was able to give the Lady Flames the lead with 26:47 remaining with her second of the day, forcing the Lady Bulldogs to change goalies
Hill then gave Lee a 10-9 lead, and the Lady Flames never looked back ending the game on a 5-1 run for the 14-10 .
Â
"When someone gets inside you really have to shut that down in the second half, and we did," praised Martin as his team held the Lady Bulldogs to two second-half goals.
Â
With the 3-0 start, Lee is off to the best start in the short history of the lacrosse program, passing last year's team that won their first two games.
Â
Broadwick, last year's leading goal scorer, ended the game with five goals, while Hill pitched in four of her own. Giles and Duda threw in two each, and Shayna Ryan rounded out the Lee scoring.
Â
Broadwick also collected two assists while Ryan and Hill added one each. Abby Fortner led all players with 10 ground balls in the contest. Broadwick and sophomore Kaylyn Dillon were able to cause three turnovers while Ryan was a force gaining eight draw controls.
Â
Abby Sanders got the start in goal playing all 60 minutes, making three saves on 19 shots. The junior allowed just two second half scores.
Â
"She [Sanders] did great. Last week we had three goalies, and this week we are down to one. We've had some injuries and sickness, but Abby picked up today and was seeing the ball well, especially in the second half," Martin when talking about his keeper.
Â
Tennessee Wesleyan (3-1) was paced by Virden and Grace Passantino with three goals apiece. Virden rounded out her point-scoring getting credit for all four of the team's assists.
Â
Dakota Halford got the start in the cage but was chased out after allowing nine goals in just 33:13 of action. Jovanna Romeo then came in for the final 26:47 stopping eight shots, and allowing only five goals.
Â
Lee will be back in action on the road as they take on rival Shorter in their Gulf South Conference opener on Saturday. The first draw is scheduled for 11 a.m.
