Chargers Sweep Past Lady Flames

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – After a lengthy rain delay the Lee softball struggled to get anything going in dropping the series finale to No. 16 Alabama Huntsville, 11-1 in five innings on Monday evening.

The Lady Flames got on the board first on a run-scoring single by freshman Taylor De Adder scoring Kayla Louie in the top of the first.

From there however it was all Chargers. Alabama Huntsville scored three in the first, three in the second and walked off with a run-rule victory on a grand slam by Jada Hayes who finished with five RBI in the contest.

Layton Murphy (5-3) allowed just six hits and one run over five innings for the victory in the circle for the Chargers. She finished with four strike outs and walked just one.

Shonnna Penney (3-8), who pitched well in a game one loss yesterday lasted just a third of an inning giving up three runs on three hits.

The Chargers pounded out 12 hits, three extra base hits and drew five walks off of three Lee pitchers. Ashley Cornell had three hits and drove in a pair. Shelby Booker singled twice and scored three runs and Amber Hammonds doubled in two runs.

The loss drops Lee to 10-14 overall and 1-7 in the GSC. The win propels UAH to 20-6 and 8-1 in the GSC.

"Tough game today. We are still searching for what makes us go," said Lee head coach Emily Russell. "We need to stop talking about it and go do it. We have done a lot of talking as a team but haven't made consistent changes."

The Lady Flames will look to snap a four-game skid on Wednesday as they travel to Young Harris for a non-conference doubleheader at 4 p.m.
