The Young Harris College pitching stifled the Lee offense throughout a doubleheader sweep by the Mountain Lions on a breezy Wednesday afternoon at Olympic Field.
YHC allowed just one hit, a single in the final inning by Justin Fragale, in winning game one 3-0. The Flames managed just six singles and were done in by a seven-run fifth to lose game two 8-2. Both games were seven-inning affairs.
"It was a tough day offensively. Young Harris did a great job on the mound and we couldn't seem to make the right adjustments. Overall, I thought we pitched well but couldn't minimize the big inning in game two," said Lee head coach Mark Brew.
GAME TWO
Lee would get on the board first in the night cap on back to back run-scoring singles by Thomas Zazzaro and Justen Freeman in the third inning.
The Mountain Lions responded with a seven-run outburst in the fifth inning to pull away. Worley tied things up with a two-run single. Tucker Greer and Dahlton Cash repeated the effort with two-run singles of their own. Cole Jackson finished off the rally with a run-scoring groundout.
Cash an RBI double to left to complete the scoring for Young Harris in the top of the seventh.
Alan Rickman (0-4) started and allowed three runs on four hits in four-plus innings.
Kyle Turner got the call in game two for YHC and went three innings yielding four hits and three runs. Dylan Nix (2-0) was credited with the victory tossing two shutout innings in relief.
GAME ONE
It was all Mountain Lions in the opener as the Peach Belt squad used three pitchers to combine to allow one hit and walk while dealing the Flames a 3-0 loss.
Drew Wilson breezed through the first three innings. Tucker Daniel (2-0) earned the win as he blanked the Flames over two relief innings. McLain Harris tallied his fourth save as he worked the final two innings.
Zazzaro (1-2) got the call on the bump for the Flames and allowed one run on five hits in 1.2 innings. Michael Hendricks was effective giving up just one unearned run while striking out five over his 3.1 innings.Â
The sweep drops Lee to 11-12 on the year while Young Harris improves to 15-7.
"We have a very good Mississippi College team coming to town this weekend. We will need a solid effort in all aspects of the game to be able to win that series," said Brew.
The Flames and Choctaws will open up the Gulf South Conference series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
