No. 23 Choctaws Slug Past Lady Flames



The No. 23 Mississippi College Choctaws flexed their muscles and made life difficult for the Lee softball team, outscoring the Lady Flames 20-4 in a doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon from Butler Field.

Lee (11-17, 1-9) dropped game one 7-2. The Lady Flames scored two in the first but from there it was all Choctaws (19-6, 7-3). The Mississippi club rolled from start to finish in game two, winning 12-2 in five innings.

The two teams will wrap up the Gulf South Conference series tomorrow at 1 p.m.

GAME 1
Mississippi's College Courtney Crawford broke open up a tied ballgame with a three-run home run in the third inning. Crawford finished with four RBI.

After giving up a pair of runs in the first Choctaw starter Hannah Creel (8-1) settled down and pitched a complete game allowing two runs, one earned. She gave up just four hits and struck out seven.

Lily Hatcher tripled home Kayla Louie to start the Lady Flames off on the right foot in the bottom of the first. Hatcher came home to score on a throwing error.

Shonna Penney (3-10) gave up all seven runs in 5.1 innings of work. She gave up eight hits and three walks while striking out four. Stevie Baird tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief and had two punch outs.

GAME 2
Cori Cooper (5-4) held the Lady Flames hitless until the fourth and the Mississippi College offense scored in every inning to roll to a 12-2 win in the nightcap. Cooper finished with six strikeouts.

Abby McKinney broke up the shutout and the no hitter as she hit a two-run laser shot over the right field wall for her fifth home run of the season.

Crawford made it a seven RBI day as she doubled home a run and in the first and fourth frames. Alexia Harmon added three hits and Bri Caldwell had two hits in the 13-hit explosion. Caldwell hit a two-run home run in the first, Gracie Terhan opened it up with two-run long ball in the second to make it 5-0 and Grace Hahn finished things off with a pinch-hit home run to straightaway center in the fifth.

Baird (3-2) labored through three-plus innings allowing 12 hits and 10 earned runs. Penney came on to clean up the final two innings and allowed a run while fanning two.
