Flames Sweep Bellarmine, Win 7-0



The Lee University men's tennis team played its first home match in almost three weeks and came away with a 7-0 win over Bellarmine University. The Flames ran their record to 8-2, while the Knights dropped to 3-7.

Daniel Prata and Antonio Pons beat Noah Neuhauser and Michael Staff 6-1 to open the doubles competition. Jesus Garcia and Cristian Pons were 6-2 winners over Evan Bottorff and Nick Johnson to secure the doubles point. Jake Okines and Bruno Medeiros gave the Flames a clean sweep of doubles action with a 6-4 margin against Caleb Buckman and Sam Rueff.

Antonio Pons won his No. 3 singles match with Rueff 6-3 and 6-0. Garcia defeated Bottorff 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Prata breezed to a 6-0 win in his first set and held off Buckman 7-5 in the second set to clinch the team victory.

Medeiros dropped just two games to Joseph Naville in the fifth position. Cristian Pons pushed the Lee lead to 6-0 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Staff.

Max Schroeder split the first two sets with Johnson with each player gaining 6-4 wins. Schroeder outlasted Johnson 10-7 in the super set tie-breaker to finish the team sweep.

"It was a good solid win," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "We needed this one to get ready for Valdosta."

The Flames challenge Valdosta State Sunday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The Blazers are ranked No. 14 in the Oracle/ITA Division II Women's Collegiate Tennis Rankings. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
