Women's Tennis Edged By Valdosta State

The Lee University women's tennis team's four-match win streak came to an end with a 4-3 loss to Valdosta State University Sunday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The Lady Flames fell to 8-3 overall and 0-2 in Gulf South Conference action. The Lady Blazers improved to 3-8 (3-0 GSC).

Lauren Trammell and Sierra Donaldson took down Birte Langestein and Rachel Chan-Yaneff 6-2 to give Lee an early advantage. Lisa Kirr and Carley Sickinger shut out Hera Brynjarsdottir and Eva Rivoal to secure the team doubles point.

The No. 1 doubles match was left unfinished. Estee Widdershoven and Daniella Barta led Lee's Asia Grzegrzolka and Micaela Belen Maiz 4-3 at the time.

Widdershoven evened the score at 1-1 with 6-1, 6-0 scores at No. 1 singles against Grzegrzolka. Barta held off Sickinger for a 7-5, 6-3 win at the second position.

Kirr overcame a first set loss to win her final two sets against Langestein 6-4 and 6-2 to knot the score at 2-2. VSU regained the lead with a three-set win by Rivoal over Belen Maiz.

Donaldson was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Chan-Yaneff at No. 6 singles to leave the fifth position as the deciding matchup. Trammell won the opening set 6-4, but Brynjarsdottir claimed the next two sets by the same 6-4 margin to clinch the team victory for VSU.

"It was a real battle today and Valdosta deserved to win," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "We made a great start with doubles today. This team is doing a great job of stepping up and competing. We have four freshmen playing (positions) No. 3-6 right now and this is the kind of match that gives them the experiences they need to become a great team."

The Lady Flames step back out of conference play on Wednesday with a 2 p.m. EDT meeting with Tennessee Wesleyan University at the DeVos Tennis Center.
