Lady Flames Defeat TN Wesleyan 6-1



The Lee University women's tennis team stepped out of conference play to defeat Tennessee Wesleyan University 6-1 Wednesday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center.

The No. 44 Lady Flames (9-3) swept the doubles competition to take an early 1-0 lead. Lisa Kirr and Carley Sickinger took down Haruka Hirata and Yvette Callaghan 6-3 at No. 2 doubles. Asia Grzegrzolka and Micaela Belen Maiz were 6-2 winner over Elisa Piquero and Arianna Pelletti to secure the team point. Lauren Trammell and Sierra Donaldson completed the sweep with a 6-2 score against Helena Cabezas Marti and Mandie Watters.

Sickinger held off Marti to win their opening set 7-5, before winning the second set 6-1 for the No. 2 singles win. Kirr was a 6-3, 6-0 winner at the third spot to put the Lady Flames ahead 3-0. Grzegrzolka outlasted Piquero 7-6 in the second set to complete the straight-set win at No. 1 singles and clinch the team victory.

Donaldson continued the Lee win streak with a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Pelletti. TWU (3-5) ended Lee's shutout hopes with a win by Callaghan at the fourth position. Laura Beth Hardesty posted a 6-1, 7-6 win over Watters to provide the final team score.

The Lady Flames return to the courts on Thursday against Shorter University. The Gulf South Conference matchup is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. EDT.
