The No. 44 Lee University women's tennis team made quick work of Shorter University with a 7-0 Gulf South Conference victory Thursday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. The Lady Flames improved to 10-3 overall and 1-2 within the GSC. The Lady Hawks fell to 2-8 (0-6 GSC).
Lee jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead following doubles competition. Lisa Kirr and Carley Sickinger shut out Anaelle Marchand and Alana Mulkey 6-0 at No. 2 doubles. Lauren Trammell and Sierra Donaldson were 6-1 winners at the third position over Taylor Harper and Victoria Overby. The No. 1 doubles match was left unfinished.
Sickinger lost just one game in beating Anastasia Jovicic at No. 2 singles. Kirr shutout Melinda Chrun 6-0 and 6-0 to win at the first position. Micaeala Belen Maiz was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Marchand to clinch the team victory.
Laura Beth Hardesty won her opening set 6-1 and was leading 2-0 in the second set when her opponent retired. Donaldson beat Overby 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Trammell completed the team shutout with 6-1 and 6-3 set scores against Mulkey.
"It was a nice reward for all the work they've put in," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. It's always been kind of a goal to be ranked in the top 50. We talked to the girls about not trying to protect that ranking, but to just go out there and go after those teams. Don't feel like you have anything to lose."
The Lady Flames take to the road this weekend for a pair of GSC contests. Lee travels to Cleveland, Miss., to face Delta State University on Saturday at 10 a.m. before heading to Memphis, Tenn., to battle Christian Brothers University on Sunday.
