CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Lee University women's tennis team posted its third consecutive win with a 7-0 shutout of host Delta State University at the Cleveland Country Club. The No. 44 Lady Flames improved to 11-3 overall and are now 2-2 in the Gulf South Conference. The Lady Statesmen fell to 2-11 (1-3 GSC).
Lisa Kirr and Carley Sickinger beat Sophie St. Amant and Katheryne Valencia 6-0 at No. 2 doubles. Asia Grzegrzolka and Micaela Belen Maiz secured the team doubles point with a 6-4 No. 1 doubles win over Nathalia Sato and Fabiola Cardenas. The final doubles match was left unfinished.
Sickinger posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Valencia to open the singles competition. Belen Maiz extended Lee's lead with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Nathalia Stelzer. Kirr defeated Sato 6-3 and 6-2 to clinch the team victory.
Grzegrzolka needed a 7-5 tie-breaker in the second set to complete her 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 1 singles. Trammell was pushed to three sets after winning the opening set with Ione' Deroode 7-6. Deroode won the second set 6-3 before Trammell closed the door with a 10-7 margin in the super set tie-breaker.
Donaldson overcame a 6-3 first set setback to win her second set with Beth Owen 6-4. Donaldson completed the comeback and the team shutout with an 11-9 super set tie-breaker win.
"We didn't play at our absolute top level, but we found ways to win and that's more important for us," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "Asia had a great win, she lost to the same girl in the fall fairly easily, so to come out and take that match was very pleasing."
The Lady Flames remain on the road with another GSC contest Sunday morning at Christian Brothers University.
