Baseball Honors Vets, Sweeps Past CBU

The Lee baseball team marched past Christian Brothers University with a 14-6 win in game and a 7-2 victory in game two on Saturday afternoon at Olympic Field.

Prior to game one the Flames honored Bradley County Veterans hosting their seventh annual Military Appreciation Day. Lloyd Kester, a World War II veteran and Bible Training School (Now Lee University) alumnus threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

"What a special day! It's my favorite day of the year and I am really proud of the veteran and community turnout for our annual Military Appreciation Day event," said head coach Mark Brew. "It's been a staple on our schedule and to add the new stadium and green space made the event even more exciting to host."

The Flames have now won three straight and improve to 14-15 overall and 6-6 in the GSC. The losses drop the Bucs to 8-19 and 4-12 in conference play.

"We need to put today behind us and get prepared for tomorrow," noted Brew. "Christian Brothers is a dangerous team and we need to come out with lots of urgency on Sunday."

Game one – Lee 14 CBU 6

The Flames pounded out 18 hits and scored eight runs in the sixth inning to breeze past the Bucs, 14-6 in Saturday's opener.

Miguel Pimentel launched a three-run home run in the third inning to cap off a four-run third frame for Lee to get the offense jump started.

CBU would battle back to take the lead before the Flames sent 12 men to the plate and had eight hits in the sixth inning to turn a 5-4 deficit into a 12-5 route.

Every starter had at least one hit and all but three drove in a run in the offensive explosion. Thomas Zazzaro doubled and tripled, drove in two and scored three runs. Fernando Ortiz had two hits and three RBI. Justin Fragale and Keshaun Smith had three knocks each.

"It was nice to get the offense clicking on all cylinders. We got some big swings up and down the line-up and that was a big key to our big innings. Brandon Thompson did a nice job in relief," said Brew.

Thompson (2-0) earned the win as he tossed 5.1 innings of relief. The sophomore allowed five hits and two runs while striking out five. Randall Coxwell started for the Flames and gave up six hits and four runs, three earned over 3.2 innings.

Gil Erwin (1-6) labored through 5.1 innings for the Bucs. He was tagged with 10 runs on 12 hits. He struck out six and walked four.

Jared Cramer led the CBU offensive attack with a run-scoring single in the fourth and solo home run in the sixth inning while Keegan Voss doubled and singled twice.

Game two –Lee 7 CBU 2

Thomas Zazzaro led off the game with a solo home run and drove in another run in the sixth to help back a quality start from Logan Workman as the Flames completed the doubleheader sweep of the Bucs with a 7-2 win in the nightcap.

With the score tied at 2-2 the Flames once again used the sixth inning to break things open, this time striking for five runs. Pimentel singled and scored a pair of runs while Fernando Ortiz, Fragale and Dalton Nay each had one-base knocks.

Workman pitched six innings and gave up just two runs on one hit. He struck out five and walked three to improve to 3-2 on the season. Michael Hendricks cleaned up the seventh and final inning with a pair of strikeouts.

"Workman really had a nice outing in his first collegiate start. We know he can close games, but felt we needed to take a look at if he could extend deeper into games and he proved that today," said Brew.

Ryan Taylor started and settled for a no-decision for the visitors as he allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits. He struck out four and walked one. Blake Dallas (1-1) retired just two batters in the sixth allowing four runs on just one hit with two walks.

Hunter Howard provided the offense for the Bucs with a two –run double into the left-center field gap in the fourth inning.
