Softball Drills Christian Brothers, 6-0, 10-1

Thanks to three home runs from Abby McKinney the Lee softball team rolled to  a doubleheader sweep over Christian Brothers winning 6-0 and 10-1 on Saturday afternoon from Butler Field.

The two teams will wrap up the Gulf South Conference series with a single game Sunday at 1 p.m. The Lady Flames improve to 13-18 on the year and are now 3-10 in the GSC. The Lady Bucs fall to 6-23 and 1-15 in league play.

"We worked hard this week on hitting and saw the outcome today," said Lee head coach Emily Russell. Holding a conference team to one run and five hits on the day is a good day. Abby hit well and played solid defense. We needed to have a solid defensive effort with the loss of Kayla Gooch (to injury) and having to switch the outfield around."

GAME 1 – Lee 6 CBU 0
Shonna Penney worked around some early control issues to toss a complete game shutout to lead the Lady Flames to a 6-0 win in the opener.
Penney (4-10) allowed just three hits and struck out a pair to earn her fourth win of the season.

McKinney provided the offensive punch as the junior hit two home runs and had four RBI. McKinney drove in the game's first run in the first frame on a fielder's choice force out. Zoe Miller made it 3-0 as she roped a two-run double to left-center.

McKinney took over from there as she launched a bullet over the right field fence in the fourth inning to make it 4-0. She would follow that with a two-run rocket shot to center.

Mackenzie Puckett (1-4) was tagged with the loss for the Lady Bucs. She pitched all six innings giving up six runs on three hits while walking five.

GAME 2 – Lee 10 CBU 1
The Lee offense got things going early and often in rolling to a 10-1 run-rule victory in the nightcap on Saturday.

McKinney kept the hot bat going as she drilled her third home run of the day in the second. Maddie Davenport followed with a RBI double to left center and Kayla Louie ripped a double of her down the left field line to score Davenport and make it 3-0.

The Lady Flames would add three more in the third inning as Claudia Jones launched a three-run line drive home run into the Lee bullpen beyond the right field fence.

Taylor De Adder (6-6) had more than enough run support as she yielded just one unearned run over five innings. The freshman gave up just two hits and one walk to go along with two punch outs.

Sierra Anderson got the start for CBU and was chased after 2.2 innings as she gave up six runs on six hits to fall to 2-8 on the year.

The Lady Flames put the run-rule into effect with back to back to back run-scoring singles in the fourth inning. Jones capped off a five-RBI day with a two-run single center to make it 10-1.
