Flames Beat CBU For Fourth Straight Win



MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Lee University men's tennis team completed an unbeaten Gulf South Conference road trip with a 5-2 victory Sunday afternoon at Christian Brothers University. The Flames won their fourth match of the week to improve to 12-3 overall and 3-2 within the conference. The Bucs dropped to 12-8 (1-4 GSC).

"It was a tough battle and we needed to dig deep today after such a long emotional battle yesterday," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes.

The match was contested at Rhodes College's Dunavant Tennis Complex.

Jake Okines and Bruno Medeiros took down Atilio Flores and Andres Calzacorta 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Javier Saez and Marvin Gebhardt evened the doubles competition at 1-1 with a 6-4 win over Daniel Prata and Antonio Pons. Jesus Garcia and Cristian Pons secured the doubles point for the Flames with a 6-4 defeat of Paul Chabaud and Philip Johnston.

Medeiros opened singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 trouncing of Calzacorta at No. 6 singles. Cristian Pons posted 6-2 scores in both sets to beat Saez in the fifth spot. Garcia posted Lee's fourth point with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Gebhardt.

Antonio Pons extended Lee's advantage to 5-0 after recording a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles. Chabaud ended Lee's hope of a shutout with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Okines. Flores claimed a three-set win over Prata to give CBU a second team point and set the final margin.

"I'm proud of our guys. Bruno and Cristian were very solid. They really helped us create some great momentum in singles today," added Hynes.

The Flames return to action on Wednesday afternoon against King University. The non-conference matchup is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at the DeVos Tennis Center.
