Flames Tame The Tornado

The Lee University men's tennis team recorded its fifth consecutive win with a 7-0 non-conference victory over King University Wednesday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center.

The Flames (13-3) gained an early advantage in doubles action with Jesus Garcia and Cristian Pons posting a 6-1 win over Arturo Alfaro and Jorge Rojas at No. 2 doubles. Jake Okines and Bruno Medeiros secured the team doubles point with a 6-3 margin against Alejandro Feliciano and Lennard Neumann. Daniel Prata and Antonio Pons tallied the same score against Sebastian Lieflaender and Charles Jabaley to complete the doubles sweep.

Prata dropped just one game to Rojas to win at No. 4 singles. Cristian Pons was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at the fifth position to push the Lee lead to 3-0. Okines held off Feliciano 6-4 in their opening set and completed the straight-set win and clinched the team victory with a 6-2 second set score.

Medeiros took down Jabaley 6-3 and 6-2 to extend the Lee lead to 5-0 over the Tornado (5-6). Antonio Pons and Garcia both dropped their first sets 7-6 and responded with 6-3 scores to force a third set in each of their matches. Pons completed his comeback over Alfaro with a 10-5 score in the super set tie-breaker, while Garcia streaked past Neumann 10-3 to finish the Lee shutout.

"We probably didn't play at our top level in doubles, but the guys did a great job of shutting the door in singles today," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "We just need to keep on continuing to build momentum."

The Flames return to action on Friday at The University of Alabama in Huntsville. The Gulf South Conference match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. EDT start.
