The Lee baseball team made it five wins in row with an 8-3 victory over Tusculum University on Tuesday evening from Olympic Field.
The Flames used nine pitchers to string together the victory. Cody Smith drove in three runs to provide the offensive punch.
"We planned on using nine pitchers today and all of them came in and did a nice job for us," said Lee head coach Mark Brew. "We really started to see things begin to turn for us at the plate last week and we've had some good approaches at the plate over this winning streak."
Cody Smith capped off a four-run sixth frame for the Flames with a two-run single up the middle. Trailing 3-2, Miguel Pimentel tied it with a single to left to start the rally. Pimentel would come home to score after Fernando Ortiz stole second and the throw from the catcher sailed into center field.
Alan Smith gave the Flames some insurance runs in the eighth inning as he doubled down the left field line to score Pimentel before Cody Smith capped the day with a bunt single to score Alan Smith.
"I've never had a bunt single and a stolen base in the same game before," joked Cody Smith after the game. "The guys just have a spark in their eyes over the last several games and I think we are starting to get healthy and play the kind of ball we are capable of playing."
David Pattinson (3-0) earned the victory after he short circuited the Pioneers rally in the fifth with an inning-ending strikeout. Pattinson tossed 1.1 innings and struck out four. Lance Hamilton and Thomas Zazzaro closed things out with two scoreless innings. Hamilton struck out a pair while Zazzaro struck out a batter.
Tusculum used seven pitchers of their own. Austin Collins (0-2) was on the hook for the loss after he gave up three runs and two walks in just a third of inning.
The Pioneers scored first in the top of the fourth when Wullenweber roped a lined shot off the glove of Lee pitcher Andrew Franklin. Wullenweber would add a run-scoring single sixth to
give the visitors a brief 3-2 advantage.
"We feel like we are heading in the right direction and we've got a pivotal series this weekend West Georgia. We struggled against them last year so this is an opportunity to make up some more ground in the GSC and get some revenge on a tough opponent. I think our guys have a sense of urgency as we reach head down the final few weeks of the regular season," said Brew.
The Flames will open up a three-game set with the Wolves in Carrollton, Ga. on Friday evening at 5 p.m.
