BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Thanks to 21 second half points from Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Year, Haley Schubert the Lee women's basketball team punched its ticket to the program's first ever GSC Championship Game with a 66-57 win over West Georgia on Saturday afternoon from the Pete Hanna Center on the campus of Samford University.
Schubert, who finished the game with 23 points, took over the game in the third quarter scoring 11 points, including a momentum shifting five-point play in the final moments of the period.
Schubert hit a pair of free throws with three seconds left, helped force a turnover off the in-bounds and nailed jumper to give Lee a 44-39 advantage. The Knoxville, native would help put the game away with 10 more points in the fourth.
"Haley made a big play for us to help us get the momentum there and then we did a great job of getting stops on the defensive end when they would try and get on a run," said Lee head coach Marty Rowe.
"I think once I was able to settle into the game I was able to relax and little bit and just play my game," said Schubert. "I'm just following the lead of my teammates who I have been on this stage before and trying to help out the best I can. It's a great feeling to be able to play for a conference championship tomorrow."
The Wolves were held to just 38.5 percent shooting from the field and were led by 10 points and seven rebounds from Jessica Brown. A'Kia Harris added nine points and nine rebounds.
Becca Cheeks gave the Lady Flames a big lift off the bench in the first half as she scored eight points and grabbed three rebounds. The junior forward finished with 10 points. Abby Bertram added 12 points and Lindsey Roddy chipped in 10 in the winning effort.
"I told our team to enjoy this moment," said Rowe. "It's the first time as a program we've been able to win at this stage in the tournament and we are looking forward to the challenge of facing a very good Valdosta State team tomorrow."
West Georgia battled back to within four at 59-55 with 2:29 left in the contest before the Lady Flames ended the battle on a 7-2 run.
Defense was the name of the name of the game in the opening half as the Lady Flames held a 22-19 advantage. Lee held the Wolves to just 25.9 percent shooting while the Lady Flames managed just 34.8 percent from the field. The two clubs combined to go 1 for 11 from the 3-point line. Â
Lee got hot in the second half going 15 of 26 from the field and 5 of 9 from the 3-point line.Â
The win propels Rowe's club to 24-6 overall while the Wolves end the season at 16-12.
The third-seeded Lady Flames will match up with fifth seed Valdosta State in the GSC Championship tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. The Blazers knocked off top-seeded Union, 68-62 earlier in the day.
