MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Lee University women's tennis team ended a two-match losing streak with a 5-2 win at Auburn Montgomery in a Gulf South Conference match Saturday afternoon at the AUM Tennis Complex. The victory is the first for the Lady Flames in the all-time series with the Warhawks.
Alba De La Torre and Sofia Mustre beat Laura Beth Hardesty and Lauren Trammell to give AUM (7-11, 5-3 GSC) the early advantage in doubles competition.
The Lady Flames (15-5, 6-4 GSC) responded by winning the final two doubles matches to earn the 1-0 lead. Lisa Kirr and Carley Sickinger took down Julia Enderink and Tonja Foessmeier 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. Asia Grzegrzolka and Micaela Belen Maiz battled back to record a 7-6 win at the top position against Sofia Navarro and Svenja Petri.
Kirr opened singles competition with a 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Petri at the third position. Belen Maiz extended Lee's lead to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-3 win over De La Torre. Trammell beat Enderink 6-4 and 6-3 to clinch the team win.
Navarro held off Sickinger 7-5 in their opening set and ended Lee's shutout hopes with a 6-1 margin in the second set. Foessmeier recorded a three-set win against Grzegrzolka to give AUM its second point.
Hardesty supplied the final margin with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Mustre at the No. 6 position.
"One of the best road wins this team has had," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "Our ladies did a great job today. We are developing some real toughness with them and I'm very proud of what they did today. We need to keep moving forward and be ready to fight again tomorrow against a good Montevallo squad."
The GSC match at Montevallo is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. EDT. The Falcons enter the day with a record of 7-8 (4-3 GSC).
