CARROLLTON, Ga. – The third time was a charms as the Lee University women's tennis team posted its sixth consecutive victory with a 6-1 defeat of West Georgia at Sunset Hills Country Club. The Gulf South Conference match had been postponed twice before finally being completed Tuesday afternoon.
The Lady Flames (14-3, 5-2 GSC) took control early with a sweep of doubles competition. Lisa Kirr and Carley Sickinger took down Shelby Brown and Meg Cummings 6-1 at No. 2 doubles. Asia Grzegrzolka and Micaela Belen Maiz were 6-0 winners over Sofia Soltis and Timia Commodore to secure the doubles point. Lauren Trammell and Sierra Donaldson completed the shutout with a 6-0 score against Jamie Bryant and Bailey McCammon.
Belen Maiz opened singles competition with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Brown to push the Lee lead to 2-0.
Bryant put West Georgia (7-5, 2-3 GSC) on the board with a win at No. 6 singles. She posted scores of 6-0 and 6-1 against Lauren Good.
Trammell dropped just two games to defeat Cummings 6-1, 6-1. Grzegrzolka was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at the No. 1 position to clinch the team victory.
Donaldson tallied matching 6-1 set scores to beat McCammon at No. 5 singles. Kirr blew by Soltis 6-1 in their opening set and held on for a 6-4 score in the second set to complete the straight-set win and provide the final margin.
The Lady Flames travel to Clinton, Miss., on Saturday to take on Mississippi College. The GSC battle is scheduled for a 10 a.m. EDT start.
The Lady Choctaws are currently ranked No. 46 in the Oracle/ITA Division II Women's Rankings with a new rating to be released Wednesday afternoon.
