CLINTON, Miss. – The Lee University women's tennis team saw its six-match win streak come to an end with a 4-3 Gulf South Conference loss at No. 49 Mississippi College.
The Lady Flames (14-4, 5-3 GSC) grabbed an early lead when Carley Sickinger beat Sofia Carrera 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Nicole Bueno evened the score for the Choctaws (12-4, 6-1 GSC) with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles against Lisa Kirr.
Paulina Cota held off Micaela Belen Maiz 6-2, 7-5 to give the hosts the lead. Alisa Morozova won the first and third sets of her three-set battle with Asia Grzegrzolka to extend the MC advantage to 3-1. Aneta Golawska clinched the team victory for Mississippi College with 6-1 and 6-2 set scores against Lauren Trammell.
Sierra Donaldson needed three sets to down Rebecca Grace Kimball. Donaldson won the first set 7-6 before Kimball claimed the second set 6-2. In the super set tie-breaker, Donaldson secured the team point with a 10-7 margin.
The Lady Flames garnered another point in doubles competition to supply the final score. Bueno and Golawska beat Kirr and Sickinger 6-1 to win the first matchup. Donaldson and Trammell were 6-1 winners over Cota and Carrera. Grzegrzolka and Belen Maiz doubled-up Morozova and Kimball 6-3 to gain the team point.
"We had some chances today, but Mississippi College were better than us today overall," said Lee head coach Patric Hynes. "We will go back to the practice court and get ready for West Alabama."
The Lady Flames return home to battle West Alabama at the DeVos Tennis Center on Wednesday. The GSC contest is scheduled for a 2 p.m. EDT start.
