Flames Bounce Back with 16-6 Run-Rule Win

Lee rebounded from a doubleheader loss to Montevallo University on Friday with a resounding 16-6 run-rule victory on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Olympic Field. The contest ended when the Flames put five runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Senior Fernando Ortiz paced the Lee 11-hit attack with a perfect 3-for-3 performance including a pair of doubles, three RBI and three runs scored. He got plenty of help from fellow senior teammate Miguel Pimentel who launched a mammoth two-run homer in the fourth inning. Pimentel, who was walked twice intentionally before the blast, finished with a pair of RBI and three tallies.

"I'm really happy for our five seniors that wrapped up careers at Olympic Field with a big win. They have been a huge part of our program for the past four years and made key contributions in this weekend's series," stated head coach Mark Brew after his team improved to 22-24 overall and 11-14 in Gulf South Conference play.

"We still have a chance to earn our way into post season. It's never easy in the GSC, but we will need to play well at Auburn Montgomery to earn that opportunity," the coach noted.

Catcher Justin Fragale also enjoyed a big day at the dish. He banged out a pair of two-base hits, knocked in three runs and tallied two scores. Thomas Zazzaro not only gained his second pitching win of the year, he also picked up a RBI with a hit and scored three times after receiving four free passes.

All totaled, the visiting Falcons' seven pitchers issued 15 free passes. Gus Cunningham lasted only 2.2 innings but was charged with the defeat. Zazzaro worked 5.1 innings for the Flames. He surrendered seven hits, six earned runs, walked two and fanned three. Lance Hamilton came on to hurl 1.2 strong innings. He gave up just two hits and struck out four while not issuing a walk.

"We knew we had to swing the bats today. I thought we got great production throughout the line-up. Ortiz had a really nice day at the plate and we played solid defense all day. Hamilton gave us some big outs in relief and Zazzaro gave us a much needed quality start," commented Brew.

Justen Freeman, Tyler Payne and Parker Stahlman also contributed to the offensive attack. Freeman had one hit, walked twice, scored a run and was credited with a RBI. Payne, one of five Lee seniors, drew a pair of free passes, posted a RBI and also singled. Stahlman continued his fine work at the plate with a pair of hits and two scores.

The Falcons (19-25, 15-12) were led by the power hitting Sebastian Samuels who blasted two homers and finished with three RBI plus scoring three times. Tyler Krabbe chipped in with a double and a single. All totaled, Montevallo finished the afternoon with nine hits.
