Lee's streaking women's soccer team posted its fourth straight shutout and the fifth of the season in improving to 5-1 as they opened Gulf South Conference play with a 5-0 win over Shorter University on the Lee Soccer Field on Saturday evening.
With junior Devin Healy leading the way with her third, fourth and fifth goals of the season, the Lady Flames completely dominated the entire game against the visitors from Rome, Georgia. Healy rang up the hat-trick with Lee's first three goals.
"I was fortunate to have such great teammates that got me the ball in perfect spots for those goals. I told them at halftime that they did the work and I was just able to finish things," said Healy after the win.
It only took the Lady Flames 3:23 to begin lighting the scoreboard. Healy directed her shot into the lower left corner of the goal and was assisted by senior Riley Engels. Healy struck again at the 7:35 mark, this time receiving an assist from junior Kelsey Yoder. Healy changed direction on her final score, driving the ball into the low-right portion of the frame. The hat-trick followed in the 12th minute. Junior Riley Henry was credited with the assist as Healy's goal sailed high into the right-side of the goal.
Riley Engels made it a 4-0 game in the 29th minute. Her unassisted goal was directed into the lower right-corner of the goal. It was senior Emma Higgins turn in the 42nd minute to close out the scoring for the evening. Avery Engels delivered a perfect ball to Higgins and she quickly fired her shot to the high right-side of the net.
"I was pleased with the way we started and how early we got the goals. I thought our effort and the way we applied ourselves in the first 45 minutes was very good," commented Lee head coach Chris Hennessey. " I felt like we took our foot off the gas in the second half but Shorter didn't go away. They kept fighting. Overall, I am pleased with the win."
All totaled, the Lady Flames fired 37 shots and had 19 on target. The Hawks were only allowed four shots by the Lee defense and all four were on goal.  Red-shirt senior Taylor Green played the first 45 minutes in goal and had one save. Freshman Mollie Wheeler came in to patrol the Lee goal in the final 45 and registered three saves. Shorter's Sydney Durham worked the opening 45 minutes in goal and was kept busy with nine saves but allowed all five Lee goals. Emily Lopez entered for the entire second half and had five saves.
"We are going to need to be sharper for a full 90 minutes when we play Mississippi College on Friday. They are off to a good start and defeated West Alabama 7-0 last night, so we will need a complete performance to get the victory. We will get back to it Monday in preparation for Mississippi College," said the coach in closing.
