CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Lee University women's basketball team maintained their position at the top of the Gulf South Conference standings with a 75-59 win at West Georgia Thursday evening. The Lady Flames, ranked No. 9 by the WBCA and No. 8 in the D2SIDA poll, improved their overall record to 14-1 and 6-1 in the GSC.
"It was a great team effort, especially on the road against a good basketball team," said Lee head coach Marty Rowe. "We rebounded the basketball well on both ends. Defensively we were able to keep them out of the lane and force some really tough shots, so I'm proud of our effort."
Lindsey Roddy was 6-for-14 from the field on her way to a team-leading 16 points. Abby Bertram recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Bertram also came up with a game-high three steals.
Camryn Grant and Nicky Widenski tallied nine points each. Widenski gathered 10 boards in the win. Becca Cheeks contributed seven points, eight rebounds and dished out four assists. Halle Hughes tossed in eight points to go with two rebounds and two assists.
West Georgia (10-4, 3-3 GSC) placed four players in double-digit scoring. Taylor Brown paced the Wolves with 12 points. Ashley Lee, Siera Carter and Kylah Mizer tallied 11 points each.
The Lady Flames outrebounded their hosts 56-42, including a 15-9 advantage on the offensive end. Lee tallied 17 second-chance points to four for West Georgia.
The Wolves received 12 rebounds from Lee. Edley Drawhorn added seven caroms and Carter amassed six more.
Lee was guilty of 18 turnovers that led to 18 West Georgia points. The Lady Flames turned 15 UWG floor mistakes into 16 points of their own.
The Lady Flames return home on Saturday, January 11, to face The University of Alabama in Huntsville at 2 p.m. UAH was an 87-71 winner at Shorter Thursday evening and will enter Saturday's contest tied for fifth in the GSC with a 4-3 record. The Chargers are 7-6 overall.
