Led by pitching of junior Logan Workman and some timely hitting in the first game, Lee split its GSC baseball openers with the University of West Georgia, winning 6-2 in the first game but losing 6-3 in the nightcap. The two clubs will complete the three-game series on Sunday with a nine-inning contest beginning at 1 p.m.
Game 1 – Lee 6, UWG 2
Workman fired a dazzling two-hitter over eight innings. He allowed one earned run, struck out seven and walked three. Michael Hendricks came on for the ninth. He had some control problems, walking three and fanning two. The right-hander allowed one earned run.
The Flames scored two runs in the third on RBI singles from Thomas Zazzaro and Alan Smith. They tacked on another score in the sixth on another RBI single by Parker Stahlman. Lee salted the victory away with two insurance runs in the seventh and a solo tally in the eighth. Smith drove in three runs and ripped a double while Zazzaro had a pair of hits and two RBI.Â
"Workman turned in another very good performance to set the tone for the day. We did a great job getting some big two-out RBI early in the game to get us going," said Lee head coach Mark Brew.
Game 2 – UWG 6, Lee 3
Alex Harper-Cook took the pitching loss. In 2.2 innings, he surrendered five hits, four earned runs, struck out five and walked three. Tyler Fairchild came for 2.2 innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs, a pair of walks and two Ks. Lance Hamilton issued three walks before being removed for Seth Konkel. In 1.2 innings he did not allow a hit and struck out three.
Smith continued his solid work at the dish with two hits, a RBI and a run scored. Ryan Beamish had a pair of knocks. Dylan Standifer homered and Justin Fragale had Lee's other hit.
West Georgia went to work in the first inning with two runs and they added two more in the third and sixth innings. The Wolves had nine hits, including doubles by Dylan Johnson, Colin Moore and Brody Wortham. Johnson finished with two hits and two runs scored. Wortham collected a pair of RBI.
Robert Coleman started and pitched the first three innings for UWG. He gave up four hits and two earned runs but struck out six. Cory Bartholomew followed for 1.1 innings. He also fanned three but walked four. Sawyer Steele got the pitching win. In 2.2 innings, he gave up two hits and sent six Lee hitters down swinging. In the seven-inning game, the Flames struck out 15 times.
"We had plenty of chances, but couldn't get a big hit when we needed it. We struggled on the mound to command the strike zone and our hitters had way too many strikeouts with several coming with runners in scoring position. We have a chance to win an opening weekend GSC series tomorrow and we need to get a good start from Alan Carter," concluded Coach Brew.
