Wolves Sweep Softball in GSC Opener

The Lee softball team opened Gulf South Conference play dropping a pair of games to West Georgia on Saturday afternoon from Butler Field.

The Lady Flames dropped a tight pitcher's duel in game 1, 3-2 before being blindsided by the Wolves in a 14-1 run-rule loss in game two.

Lee (4-4, 0-2) will look to salvage the third and final game of the series on Sunday against the Wolves (6-4, 2 0) with first pitch set for 1 p.m.

GAME 1
Lulu Vasquez took a tough-luck 3-2 loss in the circle despite giving up just one earned run and supplying the two runs on a monster home run in the sixth inning.

Vasquez (1-2) cruised through the first five innings allowing only a solo home run to Raven Smith in the first inning. She ran into trouble in the sixth after an error set up the inning for the Wolves. Sissy Atchley delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded off reliver Gracie Leslie. Vasquez finished with six strikeouts and gave up just two hits but did surrender five walks.

Offensively the Lady Flames struck out 16 times off two West Georgia pitchers with Vasquez homer and two Brooklynn Frazier doubles supplying the bulk of the offense.

Lexie Close (4-1) and Morgan Goree struck out eight batters each, allowing just three walks and scattering eight hits. Close worked the first four shutout innings in the circle for the win while Goree came on to earn the save, working around the two-run homer in the sixth.

GAME 2
The Wolves exploded for nine runs in the third inning, all with two outs, of game two to emphatically complete the doubleheader sweep of the Lady Flames, 14-1.

The Lady Flames managed just two hits in the contest and scored their lone run on a Taylor De Adders single in the bottom of the first.

Hannah Scarbrough led the way for the Wolves with a home run, double and three RBI. Both Scarbrough and Jacie Arrington launched three-run homers in the third frame. Sissy Atchley was a perfect 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Ashley Ellison, Madison Slappey and Raven Smith also had multi-hit performances as West Georgia pounded out 18 hits in the contest.

De Adder (0-2) started and was lifted after 2.2 innings allowing seven runs on seven hits. Shonna Penney gave up six runs in relief and Gracie Leslie finished off the final 1.2 innings allowing one run.

Kya Draper (2-0) cruised to the victory in the circle for the visitors giving up just one run on two hits while striking out eight.
