Lacrosse Starts Fast, Tops Wolves, 14-9

Dariana Blanton and Brittney White scored five goals each as the Lee women's lacrosse team took down Newberry College, 14-9 on Saturday afternoon at Cleveland High School's Benny Monroe Stadium.

The Lady Flames raced out to an 4-0 lead to start the match and held an 8-3 advantage heading into the intermission.

The Wolves climbed back into the contest going on a 4-1 run to open the second half and cut the deficit to 9-7 with 15 minutes remaining. From there however it was all Lee as the dynamic duo of Blanton and White traded off four straight goals to put the game away.

Last week's GSC Defender of the Week Caleigh Smith earned her second straight win in net for the Lady Flames. Smith recorded fives saves for a .357 save percentage.

White once again showcased her draw skills with 13 draw controls to help the Lady Flames maintain possession. The freshman has an impressive 37 draw controls in just two matches to start her college career.

"We are continuing to grow as a team but I like the way we are defending and today we got off to a great start to the contest and didn't buckle when they made a run in the second half," said second-year head coach Derrel Martin. "Brittney White is a special player. She already has 37 draw controls and that's been a huge boost in helping us control the game. I thought Dariana flashed her ability that we saw last year before her injury. She can score in bunches and showcased that today."

The Lady Flames held a 29-16 advantage on shots and placed 22 on target. Lee held a 23-20 advantage in ground balls and a 17-8 edge in draw controls.
Sophie Moore led Newberry with three goals while Marissa Plumer had two goals and four draw controls.

Lee improves to 2-0 on the young season with the victory while Newberry falls to an even 2-2. The Lady Flames will now head on the road for the first time in 2020 as they travel to the University of Indianapolis on Friday to take on the No. 12 Greyhounds at 3 p.m. The trip wraps up with a visit to McKendree in Lebanon, Ill. for a Sunday afternoon tilt at 1 p.m.

"We will find out where exactly we stand after this weekend's road trip," said Martin. "U of Indy is one of the top programs in the nation and McKendree will be a challenge as well. We look forward to the opportunity to compete on the road."
