The 4th-ranked Lee women's basketball team outscored visiting University of Montevallo 57-35 in the second half and went on to post a 92-61 victory over the Falcons inside Walker Arena on Thursday evening.
It was the 10th straight win for the streaking Lady Flames, who improved to 21-1 overall and a GSC leading 13-1. Montevallo dropped to 16-5, 10-3. Lee will be right back in action on Saturday afternoon at 5 p.m. when they will host University of West Alabama.
"It was good to get back on the floor tonight," said Lee head coach Marty Rowe. "You never know how a team will respond after a week off but after the first quarter, we looked like ourselves for the most part."
It was the seniors leading the way for the Lady Flames. The threesome combined for 66 of Lee's 92 points. Abby Bertram lit up the stat sheet with 27 points, six rebounds, eight assists and five steals. She made 9-of-15 shots from the field and 7-of-9 free throws.
Taylor Boggess followed with 24 points, nailing 5-of-6 3-point shots and 8-of-14 from the field. Lindsey Roddy followed with 15 points. She canned three triples and knocked down 6-of-8 overall shots. She also had six rebounds and four assists.
Sophomore Haley Schubert was perfect from beyond the arc (3-of-3) and joined the seniors with 15 points. Senior Nicky Widenski led the team with seven rebounds as the Lady Flames out-boarded the visitors 40-27. She joined senior Becca Cheeks and sophomore Camryn Grant with solid defensive efforts against a good Montevallo club. Grant also pulled down five rebounds.
Lee shot a solid 53% from the field but was even better with 3-point attempts, making 13-of-23 (57%). The treys held bury the Falcons in the second half. However, both teams were guilty of 22 floor mistakes.
Shyan Flack rebounded from a slow start to score 14 points. Freshman Marisa Snodgrass was the only other Montevallo player in double figures with 13 points. The Falcons shot 41% from the field but struggled from the charity stripe, making just 12-of-24.
Lee used its speed to outscore Montevallo 33-12 in fast-break points. The Lady Flames once again took advantage of reserves and outscored the visitors 30-15 in points off the bench. "We did a lot of good things tonight but we're always looking for ways to keep improving," concluded Coach Rowe as his club remained unbeaten in Walker Arena.
