With senior Ryan Beamish leading the way, the Lee baseball team exploded for three runs in the first inning and never looked back in posting a 10-5 victory over Young Harris College at the "Carp" on Wednesday afternoon. The Flames improved to 14-9 overall and will prepare for a GSC three-game series when they host West Florida on Saturday and Sunday.
"It's another big GSC weekend as West Florida visits town. They are always one of the teams to beat and we will need to play another great weekend of baseball to take the series," said Lee head coach Mark Brew.
After the Mountain Lions went on top 1-0 in the top of the first, the Flames countered right back. Thomas Zazzaro and Alan Smith walked to set the stage for a three-run homer off the bat of Beamish. It was his fifth four-bagger of the season.
Young Harris cut the margin to 3-2 in the top of the second on a walk to Oscar Serratos and a double by TJ Byrd. After the Mountain Lions tied the game at three in the top of the third, Lee sent nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning and tallied five runs to go on top 8-3.
Zazzaro started the rally with a single, Dylan Standifer walked and Alan Smith singled to load the bases. Beamish put his fourth and fifth RBI of the game on the board with a two-base hit. Justin Fragale reached on an error. Cody Smith followed with a one-base hit and Luke Hughes drove in two runs with a single.
"We are really swinging the bats with confidence right now. Beamish had a huge day and Alan Smith is locked in as I have seen a hitter before," said Coach Brew after his team posted its fourth straight win.
The Mountain Lions added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings but the Flames got a solo homer from Standifer in the fourth frame and scored the final run of the contest in the fifth on a RBI single by Alan Smith.
The Flames totaled 10 hits and left the rest up to nine pitchers. Alan Rickman worked an inning and gave up an unearned run. Andy Rivera followed and allowed a hit and a run over one frame. Lance Hamilton was next for 0.2 innings. Brandon Holt was credited with the pitching win. He hurled 1.1 innings and allowed two hits and an earned run. Alex Harper-Cook pitched an impressive inning. Alex Butler worked out of a jam in the sixth inning. Michael Hendricks recorded three quick outs as did Alan Carter and Andrew Franklin. All totaled, Lee pitchers fanned seven and walked four.
"We had a plan to put several arms on the field today and I was pleased with the overall effort on the mound," added Coach Brew.
The Mountain Lions used five pitchers and starter Brett Jackson suffered the loss. Ryan Inches came on for the final three innings and did not allow a hit while striking out three Flames. Byrd was the only Young Harris player to pick up two hits. Tucker Greer had a RBI single that plated another Mountain Lion.
