Baseball Claims ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Despite having its season cut short the Lee baseball team scored a major victory in the classroom in 2020 earning the American Baseball Coaches Association All-Academic Team honor.

The Flames posted a 3.64 team GPA with all 31 players registering a 3.00 or higher GPA. Lee had 11 players garner a perfect 4.00 while 18 had a 3.70 or higher and 21 had a 3.50 or higher.

"2020 has been an extremely challenging year for everyone both on the field and in the classroom.  I am extremely proud of how our guys handled the challenge academically.  They did a tremendous job collectively and achieved at an extremely high level.  I am very proud as a coach of each ones commitment to academic excellence," said Lee head coach Mark Brew.

A record 434 college and high school programs submitted nominations and received this year's award. In total, 146 high school teams along with 288 programs from the NCAA Div. I, II, III, NAIA, and Junior College levels were recognized.
"In light of the challenges faced by so many programs across the country, we are humbled to be able to honor a record number of teams for their outstanding academic achievements," said ABCA Executive Director Craig Keilitz. "It is a testament to the leadership of our member coaches and the commitment of their student-athletes who persevered during an unprecedented academic year."

Three GSC teams earned recognition from the ABCA: Lee, Montevallo, and West Georgia. This is the second straight year that the Wolves have won this award, while the Falcons received the honor for the third straight season.
