Lady Flames Post Ninth Shutout in Victory Over Falcons

Maybe it was the cool brisk wind coming out of the north that slowed the usual Lee women's soccer scoring machine in the opening 45 minutes, but Coach Chris Hennessey's club made the halftime adjustments and coasted to a 3-0 victory over visiting University of Montevallo on Friday afternoon on the Ray Conn Sports Complex pitch.

The Lady Flames improved to 12-0 overall and 9-0 in GSC play. Montevallo slipped to 5-7-1, 2-6-1. Lee will be back in action on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. hosting Auburn Montgomery. Friday's win was the Lady Flames' ninth shutout and their fifth straight. "Our defense played well again," said Coach Hennessey. "As usual I'm proud of the effort they bring to each match."

With just over five minutes (5:35) gone off the scoreboard clock in the opening half, the Lady Flames took the lead for good when Riley Henry's 50-50 header from the 18 sailed over the head of Montevallo keeper Angel Hailey. It was Henry's seventh goal of the year.

"I don't know if it was the weather or what, but we didn't play up to our standard on offense that we usually do in the first half," stated Hennessey. "We talked about that during the halftime break and our girls did a better job in the second half. In our conference, we cannot afford to let up against any team."

The margin reached 2-0 in the 76th minute when Kate Dirkse registered her second goal of the year on a penalty kick and the final tally came in the 86th minute when Lauren Weimer scored on a header from the right side of the box. Dirkse and Kierstin Havens were credited with the double assist. It was Weimer's fourth goal of the year.

The Lee defense limited the Falcons to only eight shots and four were on target. Haleign Holland worked the entire 90 minutes in goal for the Lady Flames and picked up the win. She had four saves. On the other side, Lee fired 21 shots and placed 10 on goal. Montevallo's hard-working keeper Hailey had seven saves.

The Falcons were awarded four corner kicks and the Lady Flames three. The rugged match saw Montevallo whistled for 11 fouls and the Lady Flames 10. One yellow card was issued in the second 45 minutes.
