Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | George Starr

Second-Ranked Lady Flames Push Unbeaten Record to 13-0

The second-ranked Lee women's soccer team improved to 13-0 overall and 10-0 in Gulf South Conference play with a convincing 4-1 victory over Auburn Montgomery on the Ray Conn Sports Complex under perfect weather conditions on Sunday afternoon.

"I'm proud of our girls. We finished another week of GSC play and they handled it well," said Lee Coach Chris Hennessey. "We really shared the ball well today and set up a lot of scoring opportunities. We are a little banged up and we have to take care of that before we go back on the road and face West Alabama on Friday and Alabama Huntsville next Sunday."

The Lady Flames opened the scoring quickly on Sunday. Lauren Weimer picked up a cross from Ellie Crisler and slipped her shot inside the left post from inside the eight. It was her fifth goal of the year and came at the 11:14 mark in the first half.

The Lady Flames went right back to work and senior defender Caitlin Dickson got in on the scoring act. It was her first goal of the year at 12:53 in the half. Sophomore Alexis Hale made it a 3-0 contest at the 16:14 mark when she picked up an assist from Dickson. It was her third goal of the year. AUM made it 3-1 at the break when Sydney Garth scored on an assist by Brianna Yurkovich in the 40th minute.

Midway of the final half, Coach Hennessey used several of his talented reserves, but they continued to keep pressure on the visiting Warhawks with their sharp passing. "I was really pleased with the way we set up opportunities in the second half and showed no signs of letup," pointed out the coach.

Lee's final score came in the 65th minute and a pair of veterans produced the tally. Red-shirt senior Kelsey Yoder connected for her second goal of the year off an assist from red-shirt senior Riley Henry.

As the final seconds ticked away, the Lady Flames were whistled for a foul inside the box and the Warhawks were awarded a penalty kick. In her first start of the year, junior goalkeeper Mollie Wheeler made an outstanding save and drew praise from Coach Hennessey and her teammates.

As usual the Lee defense allowed AUM only five shots the entire afternoon and three were on target. Wheeler had three saves. The Lady Flames blasted 25 shots and 10 were on goal. Warhawk keeper Karla Gaytan was kept busy with six saves. Lee had 11 corner kicks and two directly resulted in goals and AUM had only two. The Lady Flames were called for 12 fouls and the visitors 11.

After road games this coming weekend at West Alabama and Huntsville, the Lady Flames will return home to close out the regular season with Shorter University..
