Flames Take Down West Alabama 3-1

Remain Tied For Fourth In GSC Standings

LIVINGSTON, Alabama – The Lee University men's soccer team ended a four-match winless conference streak with a 3-1 defeat of West Alabama Friday evening at UWA's Tiger Stadium. The Flames improved to 9-4-1 overall and 5-3-1 against GSC competition.

"I'm really happy for the guys and getting the results they deserve," said Lee head coach Derek Potteiger. "I think we have been playing some really quality soccer over the last couple weeks, but the results didn't reflect that. Tonight however, we got the performance and the result."

Following a scoreless first half where the Flames were unable to place any of their six shots on frame, the Flames cracked the scoreboard just 3:56 into the second half to take a 1-0 lead. Sagi Rada sent a pass forward where Jeremy Bischoff headed the ball toward Edgar Cervantes. Cervantes gathered the ball and shot it past the West Alabama keeper for Lee's first goal since October 15.

Caio Arantes headed home a pass from Noam Stein in the 67th minute to up the Lee advantage to 2-0. Fabian Navarro added another insurance goal in the 81st minute to extend the cushion to three goals.

The Tigers (5-9, 3-6 GSC) avoided the shutout in the 86th minute with a goal by Richard Lopez. The goal was assisted by Lucas Hart.

"West Alabama is a good team and their stadium is a tough place to play, so we certainly were not walking into an easy matchup," added Potteiger.

West Alabama outshot Lee 18-14 and put seven shots on goal to four for the Flames. West Alabama was awarded eight corner kicks. The Flames had six corner kick opportunities.

Sam Keener improved his record to 9-4-1 after turning aside six shots in 90 minutes in goal.

"We will enjoy this one tonight but have to turn our attention quickly to UAH as we need another three points on Sunday," concluded Potteiger.

With two matches remaining, the Flames are tied with West Florida for fourth in the GSC standings, but West Florida holds the head-to-head advantage. The Flames complete the regular season with a road trip to Alabama Huntsville on Sunday and a home finale on Thursday against Shorter University. West Florida's final two contests are at Mississippi College and at Spring Hill College. Christian Brothers is two points behind and UAH trails by three points. CBU has one match left to play at Union, while UAH still has Lee and West Alabama remaining on the schedule.
