Flames Clinch GSC Championship Berth With 2-1 Win Over UAH

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama – The Lee University men's soccer team clinched a GSC Championship berth with a 2-1 win over Alabama Huntsville Sunday afternoon at Charger Park. The winning tally came from Jeremy Bischoff 4:08 into the second overtime period.

"So proud of the guys in what was such a courageous performance," said Lee head coach Derek Potteiger. "They challenged us to play into and through some high pressure tonight and our guys took the challenge dead on. It was a second game on this weekend that we got both the performance and the result."

The Flames (10-4-1, 6-3-1 GSC) and Alabama Huntsville (7-6-2, 4-5-1 GSC) held each other scoreless in the opening 45 minutes. UAH ripped off four shots to Lee's two with both goalkeepers recording one save.

Lee converted on its first shot of the second half as Fabian Navarro found the back of the net and put the Flames up 1-0 late in the 52nd minute. The lead was short-lived as Kieran Rowe tallied the equalizer just under four minutes later.

"Fabian had a very good game tonight and scored a brilliant goal for us. He is capable of that in any moment and so I was really proud of him. But for the group to bounce back from a silly equalizer and push hard for the winner was so good to see. From the start of the season, I have said I like the mentality of this group and they proved it tonight," added Potteiger.

The Flames and Chargers battled for another 48 minutes before Bischoff played the hero role with the game-winner. Edgar Cervantes was credited with the assist.

Overall, Lee outshot UAH 14-11 and fired the only two shots of the second overtime. The Flames put seven shots on goal to five by their hosts. Lee was awarded nine corner kicks, while the Chargers had two corner kicks.

Sam Keener recorded three saves on his way to earning the win in goal. The Flames also recorded a team save.

Today was the sixth time this season the Flames played into an overtime period. Lee posted a 2-1 record in the three previous matches that ended in the first overtime, but the Flames had been 0-1-1 when pushed to a second extra period until today.

"Now we have to recover and get ready for our last GSC game against Shorter - and that will not be an easy game. I know playoffs are coming after that, but our entire focus will be on Thursday night," finished Potteiger.

Following today's win and a West Florida 1-0 defeat of Mississippi College, the Flames are now in a three-way tie with West Florida and Mississippi College for third place in the GSC standings with each team completing the GSC regular season on Thursday. The Argonauts travel to Spring Hill, while the Choctaws are home against Delta State University and the Flames host Shorter.
