HUNTSVILLE, Alabama – The second-ranked Lee University women's soccer team improved to 15-0 and 12-0 in Gulf South Conference play with a 1-0 victory over host Alabama Huntsville at Charger Field on Sunday afternoon. It was the 10
th shutout of the season by the Lady Flames who will close out the regular season when they host Shorter University on Thursday (7 p.m.) at the Ray Conn Sports Complex.
"It was just a typical Sunday road victory," commented Lee Coach Chris Hennessey. "It is never easy when you are traveling, but our girls dug in, and we are pleased to have ground out the victory. The field was larger than the one we played on Friday and our girls had to adjust. Now, we will get ready for our final regular season home game."
The Lady Flames got on the board at the 9:05 mark in the opening half. Sophomore Alexis Hale drilled her shot into the lower left corner of the net after picking up an assist from junior Ellie Crisler. That turned out to be the only score Lee would need.
With Avery Engels, Caitlin Dickson and Anna Lanter constantly pushing the ball forward, they allowed their teammates several scoring opportunities. "Huntsville made it tougher on those opportunities because of the way they defended the entire afternoon," pointed out Coach Hennessey.
Overall, the Lady Flames fired 19 shots and 11 were on frame. Hale took three of those shots. Riley Henry took two, while Lauren Weimer, Crisler, Kelsey Yoder, Katie Wilson and Ashley Eulo fired the others. Charger keeper Adriana Wright was kept busy all afternoon with 10 saves.
Alabama Huntsville was able to get off six shots against Lee's ever-present defense and placed five on target. Jackie Burns worked the entire 90 minutes in goal and picked up the victory while recording five saves.
The attacking Lady Flames received eight corner kicks and picked up seven fouls against the Chargers. Huntsville had four corners and Lee committed four fouls.
