The Lee University women's soccer team completed an historic season on a cool, damp Thursday evening inside the Ray Conn Sports Complex when they defeated Shorter University 5-0. The win moved the Lady Flames to 16-0 overall and 13-0 against Gulf South Conference competition. The victory marked the first time a women's soccer team completed the regular season unbeaten. Lee will host the opening round of the GSC tournament which begins on Sunday, Nov. 7.
"It's been a great regular season and an historic accomplishment by this team. I don't want to ever underestimate the accomplishments of this team," said Lee head coach Chris Hennessey after the win. "Our girls have worked very hard behind the scenes to help achieve this goal. I'm so proud of the team and our coaching staff. Now, we have to put it behind us and get ready for tournament play."
It took the Lady Flames a few minutes to get warmed up on the cool night but led by Riley Henry the first goal came at the 9:27 mark in the first half. Henry picked up a pass from Ellie Crisler through the middle and beat the keeper with her shot to the bottom left corner of the net. She came right back with her second score in the 25
th minute and was assisted by Crisler and Nora Burton. The score was set up by Crisler who moved up the sideline and passed to Burton. She immediately centered her pass to Henry who zipped the ball into the back of the net. The final tally of the first half came in the 44
th minute. Kassidy Kellett weaved past the defender and beat the keeper with her low shot to the back of the net.
The second half scoring began in the 54
th minute when Kate Dirkse scored off a header from a corner kick from Henry. The final score of the game came when Ruth Edrington picked up a double assist from Sage Sammeli and Regan Henkey.
The Lady Flames fired often in the victory (25 times) and placed 16 on frame. Kellett fired four shots on goal. Henry and Dirkse three apiece and Alexis Hale, Sierra Brown, Edrington and Tatum Miller one shot each. Shorter keeper Katherine Fisher registered 10 saves. Lee completely dominated the Lady Hawks holding them to only one shot the entire 90 minutes. The Lady Flames used three goalkeepers, Mollie Wheeler, Jackie Burns and Haleigh Holland.
The Lady Flames had 13 corner kicks and the Lady Hawks zero. Lee was whistled for eight fouls and Shorter five.
