Flames Roll to Homecoming Victory Over Brescia, 93-64

The Lee men's basketball team gave a jam-packed Homecoming crowd in Walker Arena plenty to cheer about with a 93-64 thumping of Brescia University on Saturday afternoon.

Michael McGuirk led a balanced Flames scoring attack with 15 points on 7 of 8 shooting from the field. Quay Kennedy and Jayce Willingham added 14 each and Beyuan Hendricks posted 10 points while dishing off five assists. The Flames shot a sizzling 66.7 percent from the field while drilling 10 of 18 (55.6 percent) from the 3-point line.

"It was nice to get out on the court and hear the roar of the crowd today. I thought our guys put in solid work today on both ends of the floor and I think we are in a good spot going into the regular season," said Lee head coach Bubba Smith.

Lee jumped out to an early 13-4 advantage and never looked back in securing the exhibition victory. Brescia cut the lead to seven at 30-23 with five minutes left in the half before the Flames ended on a 14-2 run to put the game away.

The Flames pressure defense forced the Bearcats into 19 turnovers and turned those miscues into 25 points. Lee was guilty of just nine floor mistakes.

Brescia was led by Riley Shuford's 11 points and six rebounds. Jeremy Stewart and Jalen Rose joined Shuford in double-figures with 10 points each. As a team the Bearcats shot 44 percent from the field and 33 percent (7 of 21) from beyond the arc.

The Flames got production from up and down the lineup with 38 points of the bench led by seven apiece from Jalen Page and Jason Landman.

"I think our depth will be a huge strength for us as we get into the heart of the season and conference play," added Smith. "It's a long season and it's a physical battle each and every game in the GSC so we need to have everyone on the roster step up when it's their time."

Lee will get the regular season tipped off on Friday at 7 p.m. against a familiar face. The Flames will travel to Palm Beach Atlantic to take on former assistant coach Cole Rose. The longtime lead assistant for Coach Bubba Smith, and former Flame, was hired to lead the Sailfish in May.

"I look forward to Friday's night game. Cole was a big part of our program for many years, and I know he will have his team ready to play. He knows us and we know him so it's going to be a nice challenge for us to start the season. We're on the road so we need to be the intensity from the tip.

After the battle with the Palm Beach Atlantic the Flames will matchup with Embry-Riddle on Saturday at 2 p.m. as a part of the opening Gulf South/Sunshine State Conference Challenge. The Flames will battle Georgia Southwestern State in Dahlonega, Ga. on Nov. 19 in a rematch of last year's NCAA Tournament Second Round game and North Georgia on Nov. 20. Lee will finally return home on Nov. 29 to host Johnson University at 7 p.m.
