Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Carman Lastoria

Flames Fire Past Blue Raiders, 85-59

The Lee men's basketball team started fast and never looked back in handing Lindsey Wilson College a convincing 85-59 defeat on Tuesday evening in Walker Arena.

The Flames led from start to finish and enjoyed a double digit advantage for all but seven minutes of the game. Freshman PJay Smith and sophomore Jalen Page led the balanced scoring attack with 13 points each. Beyuan Hendricks added 10 points, dished off five assists and grabbed four rebounds while Jayce Willingham tallied 10 points on 5 of 7 shooting from the field.

"We certainly didn't play a perfect game tonight, but I thought our energy and aggressiveness was good from start to finish on both sides of the ball," said Lee head coach Bubba Smith. "We had some guys step up tonight. I thought Jalen and PJay gave us a big boost off the bench, and they've done that all year for us."

Jason Landman added nine points and nine rebounds while Makhi McGuire had five points and nine boards of his own. The Flames held a 39-29 advantage on the boards. Landman showcased his athleticism, especially for  a seven-footer, as he spun in the lane and scored off the glass as he was falling down to give the Flames a 29-point lead with 5:29 left in the first half.

Lee shot 56 percent (29 of 52) from the field, canned nine triples and converted 18 of 21 foul shots. Lindsey Wilson struggled shooting the basketball hitting just 38 percent from the field and only one 3-pointer (1 of 12). Foul shots were also tough to come by for the Kentucky club as it went just 8 of 14 (57 percent) from the charity stripe.

"I'm just getting more and more comfortable in this system and running the offense," said PJay. "I try and bring energy and tempo off the bench and look to get my teammates involved. We had a lot of guys step up tonight. It was a great team win."

Elijah Jordan paced the Blue Raiders with 14 points while Mark Edmond added 10 points and six rebounds.

Lee was playing without its senior leader, Quay Kennedy, who was out sick. Kennedy, who scored his 1,000-career point in Saturday's win at Christian Brothers is expected to be back on Saturday.

"It's GSC from here on out and we know that night in and night out we have to be at the top of our game," added Smith. "I think our guys are turning the corner and understanding what it takes to get where we want to go. We are looking forward to the challenge of facing three really talented conference teams before the break."

The Flames move to 5-3 on the year. Lindsey Wilson, a member of the NAIA, was counting the game as an exhibition and remain 7-5 overall.

A three-game home gauntlet begins for the Flames on Saturday at 4 p.m. against West Florida. Valdosta State will visit Walker Arena on Monday at 8 p.m. before Lee closes out the first semester with rival Alabama Huntsville on Saturday, Dec. 18. Those three teams are a combined 18-9 on the season.
