Lady Flames Blank Lincoln Memorial, 2-0 In Home Opener

Kelsey Yoder delivered a penalty kick in the 61st minute and Riley Henry connected three minutes later to give the Lee women's soccer team a 2-0 shutout over Lincoln Memorial in its home opener on Tuesday evening.

With temperatures in the 60's on picturesque evening for soccer the Lady Flames enjoyed their first game back on the Lee Soccer Field since Nov. 24, 2019 with a dominating victory over the visiting Railsplitters. Lee held a 17-5 advantage in shots and an 8-3 lead in shots on goal. Each team was granted two corner kicks.

"It was certainly nice to be back home," said Lee head coach Chris Hennessey. "We've been on the road for most of exhibitions. At times I thought we were a little out of sorts today but we found some opportunities in the second half and the defense continues to deliver for us."

Despite outshooting Lincoln Memorial 9-1 in the first half the Lady Flames were held scoreless until Yoder connected on the penalty kick after Kierstin Havens was take down in the box at the 60:29 mark. Havens slid past a defender and was pulled down to set up the first score of the match.

Henry would put the icing on the cake in the 64th minute as she blasted home a beautiful throw in by freshman Ruth Edrington before it even touched the ground.

Jackie Burns earned the win and the clean sheet in goal for the Lady Flames. The senior transfer recorded three saves coming off a nine save victory on Saturday at Lipscomb.

Emanuely Costa started the first 45 in net for LMU and allowed recorded four saves. Lynzie Hulle worked the second half and was tagged with the loss allowing both goals while recording two saves.

"With the emotional win on Saturday we talked about having to back it up with a win today. We made some adjustments tactically at halftime and released the attacking mids more and we seemed to be able to apply more pressure on them in the second half and were able to finally breakthrough."

The Lady Flames will open GSC pool play on Saturday with a trip to Valdosta State. The two teams will have an early kickoff set at 11 a.m. Lee returns home on Feb. 18 to host Carson-Newman.  The Lady Flames will play five GSC games before taking part in the GSC Spring Championship Series. All game and career stats and records will count but the GSC SCS will not count as an official GSC Championship.
