CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Lee women's soccer team continued its hot start to the 2021 Spring Season with a dominating, 3-0 victory over Carson-Newman University on a cold, wet Wednesday evening from Chattanooga Christian School.
The Lady Flames opened the scoring as Kate Dirkse served the ball into the box and found Kesley Yoder who headed home the first of two goals in the 16
th minute.
Ellie Crisler helped Lee take a commanding 2-0 lead at halftime as she beat the keeper one on one at the 41:30 mark. The score was set up by Lauren Weimer who delivered a beautiful ball in traffic to find Crisler in stride at the top of the box.
Haleigh Holland got her first collegiate start in goal for the Lady Flames and kept the clean sheet with three saves. Lilly Ebner started in net for the Eagles and allowed two goals and four saves in the first half. Hope Doyle came on to work the final 45 minutes and yielded one goal while recording two saves.
Yoder put the sprinkles on the ice cream as she converted her second goal of the match and fourth goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 74
th minute. Yoder is now 2 for 2 on the year in penalty kicks as she ripped a shot into the left corner of the net.
The Lady Flames held a 12-9 advantage in shots and placed nine on frame compared to just three for the Eagles. Both teams were awarded two corner kicks.
"I thought it was a mature performance in the first half and I liked some of things we did and obviously going into half at 2-0 gave us a little bit of cushion," said Lee head coach Chris Hennessey. "I thought we didn't play our best in the second half, Carson-Newman did a really good job in the second half but overall I'm really happy with the performance and it was a good win because they certainly tested us throughout the 90 minutes."
The Lady Flames are now 3-0 on the season while Carson Newman falls to 0-1.
"I like the balance of this team. One of things we set out to do at the start of the season was to trust the depth that we have, and we are being rewarded for that. Everybody is fresh and everybody has gotten minutes and I think that helps to give us a real good identity as we get into the business end of the season with Gulf South Conference play starting on Sunday," said Hennessey.
The Lady Flames will jump into GSC play as they host Auburn Montgomery on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. The game will be played on the brand-new turf field at Lee's Multi-Sport Complex.
