Ryan Beamish blasted a pair of home runs and drove in six runs in leading the Lee baseball team to an 8-1 victory over Lincoln Memorial University at Larry Carpenter Stadium on Olympic Field in an outstanding sunny afternoon for baseball.
The Flames went up 2-0 in the first inning when Luke Hughes doubled. Hughes advanced to third on a bunt by Dylan Standifer. He scored when Alan Smith reached on an error and went to second on a wild pitch. Colton Yeager followed with a hit that plated Smith.
The contest remained at 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning when Beamish delivered his first three-run homer to put the Flames on top 5-0. LMU countered with their only run of the game in the top of the sixth. Zach Fritts stroked a two-base hit that scored Sam Mast. Brent Richey and Brandon Parrott had the other Railsplitter hits.
Lee went to work again in the bottom of the seventh inning and again it was Beamish drilling a shot over the right-center field wall that scored Standifer and Smith. Standifer and Smith tallied two runs each. Nate Bynum had a pair of hits and Riley Black also singled. "Offensively, we really did a good job of building some big-inning opportunities and Beamish was able to cash in," pointed out Lee head coach Mark Brew.
Allan Carter started and got the win for the Flames. Over two innings, he walked four and struck out four. Chandler Ring followed with two solid innings. He allowed two walks and fanned four. Andrew Franklin followed for two frames. He worked his way out of a jam after allowing three hits but surrendered an unearned run. Alan Rickman entered for the seventh and eighth innings and was solid, allowing no hits, walking one. Jax Howard finished the game in the ninth and struck out three of the four batters he faced.
"Our pitching did a great job against a very good offensive team today. We also turned some big double plays that helped get out of some jams," said Coach Brew. The first double play was turned by Yeager and Hughes and Yeager teamed with Thomas Zazzaro for the second twin killing.
David Bryan Ellison started and worked the first three innings for LMU. He allowed four hits, two runs and was charged with the loss. Four other Railsplitters followed Ellison to the mound and it was Mason Malone who gave up two hits and three earned runs and Trey Schultz who allowed the Lee damage. Schultz surrendered two earned runs. Brennan Murphy and Mason Turner closed out the day for the losers.
The Flames travel to Montgomery, Alabama this weekend. "It's a big test for us at Auburn Montgomery this weekend. It will be our first official GSC weekend on the road and it's a tough place to play," concluded Brew.
