MONTGOMERY, Alabama – The Lee women's basketball team completed a sweep of host Auburn Montgomery on Saturday afternoon, winning 86-56 and improving to 13-6 against Gulf South Conference East Division competition. The Lady Flames finished third in the East standings and will travel to West Alabama on Tuesday evening to open GSC tournament play at 7 p.m.
Haley Schubert capped off an outstanding weekend with a 28-point performance. The junior guard nailed four triples and dished off eight assists. Freshman Julia Duncan canned a pair of 3-pointers and totaled 17 points while Hannah Garrett and Camryn Grant rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 markers apiece. Halle Hughes went to the glass for a team-leading nine rebounds.
"It was good for our team to finish the weekend off and do some things really well," said Lee head coach Marty Rowe after the win. "I'm proud of this group. They have hung in there all season and battled. We have continued to grow as a team and I'm excited for them next week."
Lee quickly jumped out to a 28-14 lead at the end of the first quarter and built the margin to 49-26 by halftime. There was no letdown in the third quarter this time around as the Lady Flames out-scored the Warhawks 21-16 in the third frame and 16-14 in the final period. Lee shot 55% for the game and made 9-of-24 treys. They went to the line 16 times and converted 13.
Jamya Tyrus hit seven of her 10 field goal attempts and finished the contest with 14 points for the Warhawks. Alexia Wallace was the only other AUM player in double figures with 11 while Lauren Powell pulled down seven boards as the Warhawks out-rebounded the Lady Flames 37-33.
Coach Rowe inserted freshman Ally Welfel, who is a cancer survivor, in the final three minutes. She was fouled and went to the free-throw line to knock down both freebies. "I've been coaching for 29 years and those two free throws Ally made to finish off our regular season are without a doubt two points I will never forget! What a great way to go into postseason," said the emotional coach.
