Hawks Snap Flames Eight Game Winning Streak

ROME, Ga. – Winning on the road is never easy in the Gulf South Conference and the No. 13 Lee men's basketball team found that to be true on Friday night, falling 78-71 at rival Shorter to end its eight-game winning streak.

The Hawks (3-8) ended the contest on an 8-3 run to pull the upset over the Flames (8-3) capping off a 48-32 second half comeback. Lee held a 39-30 advantage at halftime.

Sophomore Beyuan Hendricks tallied 25 points on 9 of 13 shooting from the field. Hendricks hit 3 of 6 from the 3-point line. Quay Kennedy added 22 points and cashed in 7 of 8 from the foul line. Michael McGuirk added nine and six boards.

Ricky Knight Jr. registered 23 points on 4 of 6 shooting from deep. Ja'Cori Wilson put together a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Jay Shropshire added 15 and Jaden Dunham had 10 and seven rebounds.

"Give credit to Shorter. They made plays and defensively they were tougher than we were tonight," said Lee head coach Bubba Smith. "We had some chances but couldn't string together enough stops. They are a rhythm team and when they start making shots, they can beat anyone. We pride ourselves with our defensive effort and attention to detail and we lacked in both those areas tonight."

The Flames took a nine-point lead into the intermission as Tariq Daughton was fouled as time expired and nailed a pair of free throws. After shooting 42 percent in the first half the Flames struggled to connect going just 9 of 31 (29 percent) in the final 20 minutes. The Hawks caught fire in the second half and connected on 58 percent from the field while going 6 of 11 from deep.

"The team that deserves to win most nights does, and that wasn't us," admitted Smith. Lee will get another crack at Shorter tomorrow afternoon as they wrap up the weekend series with a 2 p.m. tip.
