Baseball Flames Open with A Bang, Complete Sweep of Union

Alex Harper-Cook set the tone with six innings of three-hit ball, striking out seven and issuing no walks as the Lee baseball team completed the sweep of Union University with a 12-2 victory on Sunday afternoon on Olympic Field inside Larry Carpenter Stadium. Harper-Cook was credited with the pitching win.

The Flames banged out 15 hits in the contest that was shortened to seven innings due to the run rule. Freshman Riley Black continued his great start with three hits, including a triple and three RBI. He also scored two runs. Colton Yeager also banged out three hits, had a pair of RBI and scored three times.

Alan Smith doubled and finished with two hits, including a RBI and a run scored. Ryan Beamish followed with a pair of hits, a RBI and a run scored. Landon Silver doubled and singled. He collected a RBI and scored one of the 12 runs. Nate Sumner and Joshua Perez each had a hit while Luke Hughes doubled and drove home a run.

"It was an exciting weekend for our club. Anytime you can start GSC series with a sweep, you have to be pleased," said Lee coach Mark Brew. "Our pitchers did a good job and Riley Black really stepped up in a freshman role for us. We have to go back to work and get ready for a big series with Valdosta State on Friday and Saturday. It was good to see our fans turn out in this cold weather."

The Flames jumped on top 1-0 in the third inning and continued to put runs on the board the rest of the day, two runs in the fourth, three runs in the fifth, four in the sixth and ended the contest with two more runs in the seventh.

Alan Carter followed Harper-Cook to the mound but suffered control problems and pitched just 1/3 of an inning. Alex Butler came on to work 2/3 of an inning. All totaled, it was a solid weekend of pitching for the Flames.

Union was limited to four hits. Britt Netterville doubled while Austin Zeitler, Patrick Music and Jake Baker had a hit each. Trey Frierson and Darius Pugh posted RBIs after drawing free passes. Sam McMillin started for the Bulldogs and pitched five innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs and was charged with the loss. Dawson Conder, Houston High and Owen Bartholomew followed McMillin to the mound.
