ROME, Ga. – The Lee volleyball team fired past the West Georgia Wolves, 3-1 on Friday afternoon in Gulf South Conference action.
The Lady Flames ended set one on a 7-3 run to claim the victory, 25-19. Lee would take a commanding 2-0 lead in a thrilling finish to the second set. The Wolves had a look at three set points, leading 24-22, 24-23 and 25-24. Each time the Lady Flames answered and closed the set with three straight points on attack errors by West Georgia for a 27-25 win.
West Georgia avoided the sweep controlling much of the third set en route to a 25-17 win. The Lady Flames answered back with a 25-17 win of their own to seal the match in set four.
Abby Stroh had 10 kills, three aces and 14 digs to lead the Lady Flames. Freshman Allie Whittinghill continued her stellar start to her career with a match-high 12 slams. Lee welcomed back from injury primary setter, Calina Croy who set things up with 23 assists. Libero Mackenzie Pearson was a defensive wall with 29 digs. Senior Rachel Junen tallied four blocks while high flying Scottie Cook and Hannah Upton each had two denials to go along with nine kills respectively.
Tierra White led the Wolves with 11 kills and six blocks. Bret Luther added 10 kills and four blocks. Ainsley Schultz dished off 40 assists. As a team West Georgia registered 11 blocks.
The two clubs were nearly identical on the stat sheet. Each team had 51 kills, 47 assists and 91 digs. Lee held a 5-3 advantage in aces while West Georgia out blocked the Lady Flames 11-7.
The Lady Flames (3-1, 2-1) will wrap up the weekend in Rome, Ga. against Valdosta State on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. West Georgia falls to 1-4 in conference play and will take on host Shorter on Saturday.
