The Lee University men's tennis team was defeated 5-2 by No. 7 Valdosta State University Saturday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center.
The Flames (5-3, 0-2 GSC) grabbed an early 1-0 lead after sweeping the three doubles matches. Bruno Medeiros and Antonio Pons won the battle of ranked doubles teams at the No. 1 spot. The 20
th-ranked duo beat the eighth-ranked team of Yohan Nguyen and Florian Simbozel 6-3. Daniel Prata and Jordi Dasi handed Robert Cizek and Christian Felline a 6-3 loss to secure the doubles point. Jesus Garcia and Cristian Pons outlasted Luca Mack and Edward Etty 7-6 (7-5).
Valdosta State (7-0, 4-0 GSC) ended the Lee run with a No. 3 singles win by Mack over Cristian Pons. Christian Wedel gave VSU the lead with a three-set win over Nico Ramirez. Wedel won the opening set 6-1 and Ramirez forced a third set with a 6-1 advantage in the second set. Wedel responded with a 6-2 third-set score to post the win.
Simbozel won the first and third sets to defeat Garcia 6-2, 1-6 and 6-4. Cameron Trigolos defeated Antonio Pons in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-0, to clinch the team victory.
Diego Garcia tallied matching scores of 6-4 to take down Etty at No. 6 singles. Felline supplied the final team score with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 win over Dasi.
The Flames return to action on Friday, March 19, against Shorter University. The GSC contest is scheduled for a 2 p.m. EDT start.
