Lady Blazers Hand Lady Flames 5-2 Tennis Loss


The Lee University women's team collected a pair of wins in singles competition, but still fell 5-2 to Valdosta State University Saturday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center.

VSU (3-4, 3-1 GSC) won two of the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead into singles action. Estee Widdershoven and Eva Rivoal beat Lisa Kirr and Matina Ujdur 6-3. Rachelle Starreveld and Hera
Brynjarsdottir were 6-4 winner sover Micaela Belen Maiz and Larissa Wieser. The Lady Flames (4-3, 1-2 GSC) avoided the doubles sweep with a 7-5 win by Carley Sickinger and Sierra Donaldson against Birte Langenstein and Julia Saving.

Belen Maiz evened the team score at 1-1 with a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Rivoal and Ujdur gave Lee the lead after Starreveld retired following the second set. Starreveld had won the first set 7-5 and Ujdur posted a 7-6 (7-4) win in the second set.

VSU posted wins in the remaining four singles matches to claim the team win. Langenstein beat Sickinger 6-2 and 6-0. Widdershoven came back from a first-set loss to beat Kirr in three sets. Saving beat Donaldson 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Brynjarsdottir completed the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win against Hayden Smith.

The Lady Flames return to action on Friday, March 19, against Shorter University. The GSC contest is scheduled for a 2 p.m. EDT start.
