The Lee women's lacrosse team made it four straight wins on Sunday afternoon as it grounded the Lewis University Flyers, 15-10 from Lee's Multi-Sport Complex.
Brittney White continued her fantastic sophomore campaign with six goals and seven draw controls. White is ranked fourth in the nation in draw controls per game (8.60) and is fifth in goals with 23.
The Lady Flames used a 5-1 run over the final 10:40 of the first half to take an 8-4 lead into the intermission. The Flyers would pull within two at 11-9 with 11:58 left in the contest before Lee runs again used a scoring run, this time a 4-1 over the last 10:42 to secure the win.
Dariana Blanton had two goals and two assists while Shayna Ryan added a pair of goals and an assist. Kelsey McGowan gave Lee four players with multiple goals as she struck for two and added an assist.
"Today, we prevailed against a very fast and capable Lewis University lacrosse team. Their speed and pressure kept us uncomfortable for most of the game and led to our nineteen turnovers which is still an area where we need to improve," said Lee head coach Derrel Martin. "Their speed made it tougher for us to dominate the draw controls where we usually have a distinct advantage with Brittney White coming in at #4 in the nation in that statistic. Even so, she still had seven draws and Emily Osborne came up with five. Brittney added to her offense with six goals and an assist. Shayna Ryan, Dariana Blanton, and Kelsey McGowan each had two goals apiece. Despite their pressure, we were able to get to fifteen goals and hold them off."
Freshman goalie Kaleigh Bernard worked all 60 minutes and registered 12 saves to pick up her third win of the season. Emily Osborne added two groundballs from her defensive spot and is now the all-time leader in Lee lacrosse history in that category.
"Kaleigh Bernard had twelve saves in goal, and our defense worked hard for the entire game to hold off Lewis' quick offense. Emily Osborne added two ground balls to give her an even 100 for her career as the All-time ground ball leader for Lee lacrosse," added Martin.
Lindsey Taub scored three goals to lead the Illinois club. Meltonique Bowen and Alyson Jines had two each while Paige Zahler, who leads the Flyers in goals and points, set up the offense with three assists.
Lee held a 30-27 advantage in shots and 25-22 edge in shots on goal. Lewis scooped up 14 groundballs while the Lady Flames had 11. Draw controls were nearly even with Lee holding a slight 14-13 edge in the center circle.
The Lady Flames improve to 4-2 on the year and will look for their fifth straight win as they jump into Gulf South Conference play and host Montevallo on Sunday at 2 p.m. Lewis falls to 1-3 on the year.
"We start our conference play next Sunday, and it is essentially the start of a second season for us. We will be working hard this week to minimize our mistakes and enhance our ball control in preparation for the conference schedule," concluded Martin.
