Workman, Rivera Pitch No. 7 Lee Past Falcons in 1-0 Contest

Lee's Logan Workman and Andy Rivera combined to strike out 18 University of Montevallo hitters and the Flames scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning to claim a 1-0 victory over the visitors at Larry Carpenter Stadium and Olympic Field on a cool and breezy Friday evening.

The two teams will square off again on Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader that is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m. The win improved Lee's record to 15-2 overall and 14-1 in GSC play. The Falcons dropped to 9-10 and 6-10.

Workman pitched seven innings and struck out 15 Montevallo batters. He allowed only one hit and picked up his third win of the season. Rivera entered for the final two innings, working his way out of a jam in the eighth before fanning two of the three batters he faced in the ninth. All totaled, he gave up a pair of singles and the tying run was on third base when he registered a strikeout to end the Falcon threat.

"Our defense continues to play extremely well. Workman and Rivera both did a tremendous job on the mound.  Montevallo pitched us tough and did a great job mixing on our hitters. We need to make some adjustments tomorrow and be better at the plate in order to get the series," remarked Coach Mark Brew after the unusual win.

The Flames scored their only run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Justen Freeman walked and Alan Smith followed with a one-base hit that sent Freeman to third. Ryan Beamish was intentionally walked to load the bases. Dylan Standifer struck out with the sacks jammed but the ball sailed over the catcher's head, allowing Freeman to score. Thomas Zazzaro doubled for Lee's only extra base hit of the game. Beamish and Joshua Perez had the only other singles in the victory.

Montevallo used seven pitchers in the unusual game as they tried to match up with the Lee hitters. Ryan Duncan, who came on for 1.1 innings in the sixth was charged with the loss. Jake Smallwood had a two-base hit in the loss while Alex Langford and Reed Latimer had the other hits.
