Lady Flames Win Falcon Classic In Outdoor Opener

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Lee University women's track & field team amassed 157 points to open the outdoor season with a first-place finish at the Montevallo Falcon Track & Field Classic. As individuals, the Flames collected four first-place finishes along with four Lee records.

Alabama Huntsville was second in the team standings with 139.5 points, Mississippi College was third (85), while West Georgia and Alabama A&M tied for fourth with 68 points.

Becca Umbarger completed the 3000-meter steeplechase in 11:44.94 to win the event by over seven seconds.

Tyra Duma posted Lee records in the long jump and triple jump. She was first with a triple jump of 11.57 meters and finished second with a long jump of 5.60 meters. Carissa Hall was second in the triple (11.36 meters) and fourth in the long jump (5.43 meters).

Deborah Rubin set a Lee record in the hammer throw with a first-place mark of 47.33 meters. Mattie Thomas finished 11th with a throw of 30.80 meters and Sophie Frederick was 15th with a toss of 23.66 meters. In the shot put, Rubin finished third with a throw of 11.84 meters. Frederick (11.28 meters) was sixth and Thomas placed 10th (10.39 meters). Frederick was fourth with a discus throw of 33.03 meters, while Rubin finished 12th with a throw of 24.37 meters.

Liezl Theron scored 4419 points to win the heptathlon. Brooke Long finished fourth with 4045 points. Theron recorded a Lee record in the heptathlon high jump with a clearance of 1.60 meters. She finished first in the 800; second in the 100, 200, high jump; third in the long jump and shot put; and fourth in the javelin. Long was first in the 100; second in the long jump; third in the 800; fourth in the 200; sixth in the javelin; and seventh in the high jump and shot put.

Kristen Blevins was the first Lady Flame to finish in the 100-meter dash. She crossed the finish line third overall at 12.38 seconds. Kyleeyah Whitehead was seventh (12.64), Baylie Murphy finished ninth (12.64), Duma was 13th (12.82) and Jaila Whitaker was 16th (12.92). The 4x100-meter relay team of Whitehead, Murphy, Whitaker and Blevins placed second with a combined time of 47.55 seconds.

Blevins added a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash after stopping the clock at 24.91 seconds. Mikayla Beeler finished 12th (26.30) and Murphy (26.54) was 18th. Hannah Wright finished 33rd (27.36) and Whitaker's time of 27.77 put her in 35th.

In the 400-meter dash, Beeler (57.32) was second and Hall (58.31) third. Liza Kellerman added another third-place finish with a time of 2:16.49 in the 800-meter run. Olivia McLain was eighth (4:52.31) in the 1500-meter run.

Wright added second place finishes in the 100-meter hurdles (16.69) and the 400-meter hurdles (1:09.29).

Three Lady Flames finished in the top eight of the 5000-meter run. Audrey Royer placed second at 17:58.61. Elizabeth Heckman (18:55.70) was sixth and Elizabeth Beckham was eighth (19:08.42).

Kendra Irvine cleared 3.08 meters to finish fifth in the pole vault.

The Lady Flames are scheduled to compete at two different meets this weekend. Part of the squad will travel to Raleigh, N.C., for the Raleigh Relays, while the rest will compete at the 2021 Al Schmidt Bulldog Relays in Starkville, Miss.
