CARROLLTON, Georgia – Led by another powerful hitting display, the Lee baseball team completed a three-game sweep over host University of West Georgia on Saturday afternoon at Cole Field. The Flames pounded out 14 hits in the 10-8 victory. The 6
th-ranked Lee club improved to 21-2 overall and 19-1 in GSC play.
"What a performance by our hitters this weekend. They really stepped up to the challenge and led us all weekend with 36 runs," praised Coach Mark Brew. "We had some very good individual performances, but I want to single out Ryan Beamish's huge weekend. I also thought Brandon Daniels gave us a nice lift from the bottom of the lineup."
Quickly jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, the Flames did the job with singles by Thomas Zazzaro, Justen Freeman, Alan Smith, Colton Yeager, Landon Silver and Daniels. Beamish doubled home Freeman in the fourth and the Flames led 6-1.
The Wolves countered back with one run in the third, two in the fifth and three in the sixth to tie the game at six. Lee tallied three runs in the eighth when Zazzaro and Beamish homered. It was Beamish's fourth round-tripper of the series and 11 RBI over the three games. The left-handed slugger now has 10 home runs and a team-leading 36 RBI. The Flames added an insurance run in the ninth when Daniels ripped his first homer of the year.
Chandler Ring toed the rubber for the Flames over the first 5.2 innings. He gave up nine hits and four earned runs. It was Seth Konkel who picked up the win by working 2.0 innings, allowing an earned run, striking out five and walking one. Rubber-arm Andy Rivera came on for the final 1.1 innings. He picked up his seventh save while allowing one hit and one run. Peyton Berry was the losing West Georgia pitcher.
"Rivera pitched on fumes today and gutted out the last four outs. Ring gave us a quality start and Konkel did the job out of the bullpen," pointed out Brew. "We have huge mid-week game with a top-10 team at Tusculum on Wednesday." Next weekend GSC series has been cancelled because of a COVID outbreak on the Alabama Huntsville team.
