Softball Drops Series Finale to Wolves, 6-1

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The West Georgia Wolves completed a three-game Gulf South Conference Series sweep with a 6-1 win over the Lee softball team on Saturday afternoon.

Alley Taylor continued her tear of a weekend for the Wolves as she hit her third home run of the series, a two run shot, in the bottom of the first inning to give UWG a lead they would not relinquish. Taylor added a sacrifice fly in the third inning to give her three RBI.

Shonna Penney (0-1) suffered the loss in the circle for the Lady Flames. She went 3.2 innings allowing five runs on five hits. She walked three and struck out two. Gracie Leslie came on in relief and gave up on run on three hits over the final 2.1 innings.

"Game three is always tough. We grabbed a lead but couldn't make it stand up. We let it slip away and didn't make enough quality adjustments at the plate. We will get back to work this week and be better prepared next week," said Lee head coach Emily Russell.

Morgan Goree (5-3) was electric in the circle for the Wolves as she struck out 10 batters and allowed just one run on two hits to earn the victory. Goree walked in a run in the first inning before shutting the Lady Flames down for the rest of the contest.

Kayla Louie and Shelby Cole tallied the only hits for the Lady Flames. Abby McKinney drew a bases loaded walk in the first to account for the lone run.

Ashley Ellison was a perfect 3 for 3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored to help lead the West Georgia offense. Kristyn Nix doubled and scored twice while Chandler Mevis added a pair of singles.

The Lady Flames fall to 9-12 on the year and 7-8 in the GSC. With the win the Wolves improve to 16-6 and are 12-3 in league action.

The road doesn't get any easier for the Lady Flames as they travel to take on Carson-Newman on Tuesday at 1 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader before visiting No. 22 Alabama Huntsville next weekend for a three-game series.
